Two friends, both with an interest in providing healthy alternatives to fast food, will open Macomb County’s first Pita Pit restaurant on Romeo Plank in Macomb Township on Oct. 8.
Tami King and Debbie Fader have been busy preparing the 1,300-square-foot restaurant at at 50966 Romeo Plank near 23 Mile for its opening next week. They’ve hired 25 people, and completed most of the store’s interior design and construction themselves.
Pita Pit’s menu features 8-1/2 inch rolled sandwiches made with healthy ingredients. Meats include the typical deli, but also grilled meats, gyro, chicken souvlaki, and prime rib. There’s veggie pitas too, with choices like falafel, spicy black bean, and hummus. Breakfast pitas will be available all day.
Customers will be able to select their own toppings, which includes the usuals but also some unique items like feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce.
Pitas will cost $6.45 each or $8 to $9 for a combo, which includes chips and a drink.
The ladies – who met at a chiropractor’s office where they both once worked – decided to open the restaurant because they share the same views on healthy living. “So many families are busy and eating on the run,” King said. “We want to provide a decent, healthy meal,” she said.
Founded in 1995 in Ontario, Pita Pit’s goal is to offer healthy, fresh fast food. Franchising in the U.S. began in 1999 when the first store opened at Syracuse University. There are now 300 stores in North America, including one in Oakland County.
Pita Pit’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Call 586-846-3236 or visit the Pita Pit website for more information.
