State House Rep. Lisa Brown said she was not told why she was prohibited from speaking on the floor Thursday about an education bill, but she's getting all the time she needs to speak now.
Brown (D-West Bloomfield), a Jewish mother of three, was barred from speaking after she claimed House Bill 5711 forces contradictory religious beliefs upon her and others, referencing her own vagina at the end of her speech.
The remark went viral Thursday night amid concerns that the House GOP majority went too far in banning Brown for using what she referred to as the "medically correct term."
London-based morning newspaper The Independent points out that the remark spawned a Twitter trending topic: #Vaginamovielines, in which key phrases from famous quotes in films are replaced with "vagina."
Patch user Alan Stamm left a comment: "Rep. Brown v. Republican men is getting wide national attention, with coverage and commentaries on ABC, NPR, The Atlantic, Rachel Maddow's blog, Politico, Jezebel, New York Mag and The Daily Dish."
The Detroit News reported that Brown's comments, with the use of the word "vagina", violated decorum of the House, according to spokesperson for the Republican majority.
House GOP spokesperson Ari Adler tweeted, "2 Reps. aren't being recognized to speak today because of their actions. Has nothing to w/gender, religion or topic."
Brown is expected to interview on WDIV-TV Detroit on Friday morning.
What do you think? Take the poll, leave a comment, or chime in on both.

Maybe I have the wrong idea about what goes on in the state legislature, but if this is the worst thing you can say on the House floor, I think we may need to re-sort our priorities.

Seriously? vagina. Vagina. Vagina. Since when did that become a bad or distasteful word? Is arm okay to say? Or nose? I bet even rectum would be ok. Body parts, people. Silly old men.

Using the medically correct term for a part of female anatomy "violates decorum"??? WTF!?!?! I apologize for my gender, far too many of whom are not evolved enough to behave maturely and rationally. Maybe some of them have used the slang terms for vagina for so long (mostly behind closed doors, of course) that hearing the proper term caught them of guard. That, or they are so used to dominating the conversation on issues pertaining to women (over 80% of the time, rarely allowing women to speak on issues that actually pertain to them) that hearing a woman speak shocked and/or frightened them. UGH!!!

Penis! Vagina! Anus, sphincter, and rectum! For Christ's sake this is the legislature not an anatomy class from middle school. Breasts! If grown adults cannot be mature enough to use proper medical terminology freely, the damn sure aren't mature enough to make and pass legislation for the rest of us. Scrotum!

...see what we're having here see (in my humphree bogart voice) is a word "vagina", that's leaving a distasteful palate in the mouths of ....'those' who choose not to partake in the acquaintance OF a VAGINA! I love vagina, I came out of one and I can't wait to.... you get my drift :-). I bet if she would have said "penis" they all would have jumped for joy! "Hercules, Hercules, Hercules!" LMVO

Refering to body parts by their correct names is not a problem. Would there have been such an uproar if she said arm, leg or shin I don't think so. If the republican majority thinks that vigina is bad word thay are once again showing how out of touch they. It is 2012 open discusion is a good thing.

Message to Steve morgan: Republicans are not nazis, and if you would study history you would know this. We do not want abortion outlawed, we just don't want the taxpayer (me) to pay for it when you knock up your little sister. You did the deed, you pay for the repercussions. It is the same as the morning-after pill; if your mom wants to pick up some stud in a bar, I don't want to pay for her stupidity. Pay for it yourself.

Furthermore, if vagina violates house decorum (whatever that is), than how were sodomy and other crime against nature laws passed many years ago? Did the legislature seriously discuss it in the manner of "it shall be unlawful for a man to insert object A into another man's object B" ? Really?

Hi folks, a quick update on how far-reaching this story has become. Eve Ensler, creator of "The Vagina Monologues" is coming to Lansing Monday to give a special performance of the show with local legislators. Here's a little more info if you're interested: http://patch.com/A-vndm

First, I agree that not be able to speak bc of using Vagina is absurd. This along with "bad" word are just words. We as humans have a choice to let words trigger an emotional response. Not beig able to use ANY word stifles our freedom of speech. If people feel the need to curse then so be it. Everyone uses those words...again there just words and YOU let them trigger the emotional responce. So grow up and get over it.
