Macomb Township may have a relatively low crime rate, but it too has its cases of arson, child pornography, assault and gang violence.

Several cases committed by and against township residents have been making their way through the criminal justice system over the past year. Some have been delayed, while others are expected to arrive at their conclusion in late August or September.

Here are a few of the cases Patch is following:

Feds Expected to Prosecute Macomb Man for Alleged Possession of Child Porn

Although his case was dismissed in district court Monday, a 45-year-old Macomb Township man is now expected to face federal prosecution for allegedly possessing child pornography, in one instance showing a victim as young as 6 years old.

Daniel Joseph Morris was originally arraigned in the 41-A District Court of Shelby Township on 10 counts of child pornography possession and one count of use of a computer communicating with another to commit a crime.

The county prosecutor dismissed the charges without prejudice on Monday to allow federal prosecutors to bring their own charges against Morris. It is unknown at this time what the new charges will be.

3 Men Await Sentencing for Assaulting, Terrorizing Dakota Students

Two men from Sterling Heights and one from Shelby Township will be sentenced Aug. 30 and Sept. 6 on more than 10 counts each stemming from the June 13, 2011 assault of four Dakota High School students. 

On July 12, a jury found both Vincent Bosca, 46, of Sterling Heights, and Allen Brontkowski, 46, of Shelby Township, guilty of multiple charges, including extortion, unlawful imprisonment, assault with a dangerous weapon (for Bosca), assault and battery (for Brontkowski) and felony firearm. Bosca also faces charges of maintaining a drug house and the delivery and manufacture of marijuana.

A third man involved in the assault, Gerald H. King Jr., 46, of Sterling Heights, plead guilty to the same 10 counts originally faced by Brontkowski, which included assault to bodily harm less than murder rather than assault and battery.

King also testified at the trial of Bosca and Brontkowski. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 6.

Sterling Heights Man to Face Trial in Death of Dakota Graduate

The driver of the Jeep involved in the 2010 rollover accident that caused the death of 18-year-old Macomb Township resident Brittany Nowicki is expected to go to trial Sept. 18 and could face up to 15 years in prison if the prosecution is able to prove that the Sterling Hights man knew he was driving with marijuana in his system.

The trial of Timothy Wilds, 20, was scheduled for July 17, but has been delayed to allow the prosecution and defense teams time to appeal two of the presiding judge's orders.

The prosecution will appeal the order that they must prove Wilds knew he had tetrahydrocannabinol (the active ingredient in marijauana) in his system prior to the accident, while the defense will appeal the judge's refusal to give jurors a "lesser included" option for the verdict. This option would reduce the penalty to a one-year misdemeanor.

Nowicki, a 2010 Dakota High School graduate, was killed Dec. 10 when the Jeep she was traveling in lost control, struck another vehicle and overturned at Plumbrook Road east of Schoenherr in Sterling Heights.

Macomb Devils Diciple Remains Behind Bars Until Next Court Date

The Macomb Township man identified by federal prosecutors as the national vice president of the Devils Diciples Motorcycle Club will remain behind bars until his next court hearing, the date of which has yet to be set, according to the U.S. District Court.

On July 23, U.S. Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen ordered Paul Anthony “Pauli” Darrah, 48, of Macomb, be freed on a $10,000 unsecured bond. U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland reversed this order following an appeal by federal prosecutors arguing Darrah was "a danger to the public and a flight risk," according to the Detroit News.

Darrah was among 41 members of the Devils Diciples Motorcycle Gang identified in an 83-page federal indictment unsealed July 13 in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Members of the Clinton Township-based motorcycle gang are accused of drug trafficking, robbery, gambling, racketeering conspiracy and countless violent crimes.

If convicted of these charges, Darrah could face up to life in prison.

Macomb Arsonist Awaits Sentencing in Circuit Court

A Macomb Township man is expected to be sentenced Sept. 5 in Macomb County Circuit Court on counts of arson and domestic violence.

Dujuan Edward Smith was arrested Feb. 3 for allegedly setting fire to the home, now demolished, at 45300 Card Road in Macomb Township.

The case was delayed from Feburary until mid-July to allow Smith to undergo psychological evaluations that would examined his mental state at the time of the alleged crime and determine whether he was fit to stand trial.

The case was transferred to circuit court on July 2 and Smith pleaded guilty to the counts of arson and domestic violence on July 23. A second count of arson was dismissed.
