Where Are Macomb Township's 10 Most Dangerous Intersections?

Garfield at Hall Road has the highest-frequency of crashes for any intersection in Macomb Township, according to SEMCOG data for 2007-11.

With an average of 42 crashes per year since 2007, the intersection at Garfield and Hall Road is one of the most dangerous in Macomb Township, according to crash data collected by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).

While personal experience provides every motorist with his or her own list of the most dangerous intersections, SEMCOG uses annual crash data to analyze which crossroads cause drivers the most problems and why.

In some cases it is alcohol or red-light running that causes the accident, but in most cases it is driver error that is to blame – specifically when the driver is in the 16 to 24, or 65 and older age bracket, according to SEMCOG. Of the accidents at the Garfield-Hall Road intersection from 2007 to 2011, 44 percent involved young drivers, defined as those age 16 to 24.

This same age bracket was involved in at least 40 percent of all accidents recorded from 2007-11 in the 10 highest-frequency crash locations in Macomb Township.

The 10 highest-frequency crash locations in Macomb Township include:

Intersection 2011 Annual Average 2007-11
1. Garfield at Hall Rd. 47 42
2. 21 Mile at Hayes Rd. 46 41.4
3. 22 Mile at Hayes Rd. 35 34.6
4. 23 Mile at Romeo Plank 27 31
5. 21 Mile at Garfield Rd. 28 29
6. Hall Rd. at Hayes Rd. 22 29
7. Hall Rd. at Heydenreich 10 28.6
8. 23 Mile at Hayes Rd. 42 28
9. Hall Rd. at Romeo Plank 35 27.8
10. 21 Mile at North Ave. 29 27.2

While Macomb Township motorists probably expected four of the top 10 highest-frequency crash locations to include Hayes Road intersections, it may come as a surprise that the 22 Mile and Romeo Plank intersection doesn't crack the top 10, but instead ties for 15th.

Intersections with major thoroughfares and mile roads had the most accidents, according to SEMCOG, but side streets do come into play starting at No. 28, where an average of 11 accidents occur per year in the intersection of Hayes Road at Lakeside Boulevard.

Which intersections do you consider the most dangerous in Macomb Township? Tell us in the comments and we'll see where they fall on SEMCOG's list.

Yes very surprised about 22 and RP didn't make the top 10. That intersection scares me, as well as 21 Mile and Heydenreich, I don't like the set up there, the light timing doesn't make a lot of sense and people will start to go when it's not their turn because they think it's going to be their tun because if you get stopped at that light, it's a LONG light and people get anxious. JMOP. But I do agree with the top 10!!

21 and heydenreich seems like it should of made the list. Why is it we in michigan can not keep are intersections more standard. It seems like when you come up on one intersection the left turn lane goes first then just travel a mile down the road and the left turn will be last, this makes it very confusing. Oh and one more thing that I feel is stupid. When your in the median on hall road to make a left the people across from you that are making are right have the right away. Why not put arrows in the road so everybody goes at the same time but has to stay in there closest lane and merge across the lanes once they get going down hall. I belive florida has it like this.

Likely because Florida doesn't have "Michigan left turn" lanes, which is where many of the right hand turners are headed, and forces them to cross the left turners' paths. Not a good setup.

21 Mile and Heydenreich is No. 22. It had an average of 17.2 crashes a year since 2007.

22 and RP is my least favorite intersection in the whole area. They definitely need a left had turn light there from all directions! Also, there are plenty of accidents at 24 Mile and North Avenue too.

Believe it or not, 24 Mile and North Ave actually comes in as No. 66.

There have been alot of accidents in the last 1-2 years at 24 Mile and Hayes. Oddly, I don't recall any at the "deadly" roundabouts on 25 or 26 Mile.

24 Mile and Hayes is No. 24. The roundabout at 25 and Hayes is No. 81, for perspective.

My business is located right on the corner of 22 mile and Romeo Plank. Customers come in all the time and ask, how many accidents do you see per day... I tell them, I really don't see many. As bad as the intersection is, people know to be careful going through the intersection, which prevents accidents. I would much rather go though this intersection than 23 and RP... People go through that intersection at 60-70 mph, all while people are confused with the difference of blinking yellows and blinking reds, and turn signals.

I am very happy that you guys posted this chart. I was always curious about the worst intersections... I believe 22 and Romeo is the worst intersection structurally, but I do agree that it is not the most dangerous..

I agree with Ken about the lack of signal light consistencies throughout this area. I've been living in this area for three years now and I've gotten use to the different types of signals. However, I've been driving twenty years, plenty of experiance. My son however, just got his license and I am gonna be really nervous because I have no faith in the safety of these roads. Another major problem is the speed limits are too high all over and those passing lanes on the mile roads (at all the subdivisions) are not safe. I almost always have to make unnecessary quick decisions when behind a car turning left, oncoming left turning cars and ppl coming out of subdivisions. This is all too much for the young and new drivers.

What about Canal & Garfield?? I've seen quite a few bad accidents there in the past few years.

You'd be right. It's No. 3 for Clinton Township, with an average of 47.2 accidents a year since 2007.

It's not Macomb Township. That intersection is Clinton Twp.
