Macomb Stocks Up for Super Bowl

Macomb Township residents gear up—with food, drinks—for Sunday's big day.

While the big blizzard was barreling toward Michigan, most people were stocking up on essentials to make it through the big snowstorm.

For Michael Wright of Macomb Township, however, the blizzard of 2011 was of little consequence.

“I’m not stocking up because of the storm,” he admitted while leaving the Meijer store on Hall Road earlier this week. “I’ve got plenty of food to get through the storm. This is all for the Super Bowl.”

Wright says he spent about $150 on beer, pretzels, soda and other food items and he’s expecting to spend even more on the actual day of the event because he’s ordering pizza for the 15 or so friends he expects to come to his home in the 21 Mile and Romeo Plank area.

“I go all out every year and my wife thinks I’m crazy,” he said. “She doesn’t like all the noise because I make it like a regular party—we’ll pretty much party until at least midnight—so she and her sister go shopping all day. So it actually ends up costing me more because of whatever she buys.”

Wright isn’t alone. With the football season coming to an end this weekend, a lot of people are gearing up for the season’s biggest party.

“I’m usually ready for the football season to be over with by the end of the season but I like it to go out in style,” said Shane Martin of Macomb Township, who was also shopping for his own Super Bowl party.

“My wife likes the game, too, although I think even she would admit she prefers the commercials. We make sandwiches and have beer and wine for everyone,” he added. “We have couples come to our party, so everyone brings a dish. It’s just a nice and relaxed day. A nice and relaxed day with football and beer, so it’s kind of like a perfect day.”

Not everyone opts to celebrate at home. Some revelers choose to go out to area bars to celebrate the game.

Since it’s one of the biggest bar days of the year, most facilities have specials to draw in customers.

At on Hall Road, for example, specials include $3 beer pitchers and 25-cent wing specials starting at 6 p.m.

“We will be giving away prizes that evening also,” said owner Scott Pinter.

Leslie Handler, a mother-of-two from Macomb Township, said she actually picked up a lot of snacks for her teenagers for the actual game—but she plans on going down to a bar in Shelby Township.

“My kids are kind of having their own little party but I don’t want to hang out and ruin their time so me and my friend are going to go down to the Cass Bar & Grill,” Handler said. “I don’t necessarily like football, but the Super Bowl is a special event, so I like to go out and have some fun every year.”
