“I created this event, because every Valentine’s Day there is always a Daddy-Daughter Dance that I would read about in the paper, so I thought, what can moms do with their sons,” said Kathy Otto, Chippewa Valley Schools director of Adult and Community Education.
Otto initially tried a mother-son dance, but said she soon realized, boys would rather be playing gym activities with their mom than attending a formal dance.

The Mom-Son Night was born more than a decade ago and boasts several hundred participants each year.
“Mom-Son Night was adopted more for what boys want to do to have fun with mom,” Otto said. “More than a decade ago when I first developed this event, I brought my boys with me and they had a great time.”
The event features a variety of activities mom and son can enjoy together, including basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming and carnival games.
Parent participation is required for the gym activities and children under 8 years old must be accompanied by a parent in the pool.
The large gym at Dakota is divided into three parts for the sporting events, and the school’s small gym is converted into a carnival room.
Each game is one ticket and $1 buys five tickets. Otto said every child goes home with a prize.
She added while pre-registration for the event is preferred, no couple will be turned away at the door.
Registration for the event can be done online at https://onlinereg.cvs.k12.mi.us, or in-person at in Macomb.
Tickets are $30 per mother-son pair, and $10 for each additional child.
