Where Are Macomb Township's 10 Most Dangerous Intersections?

Garfield at Hall Road has the highest-frequency of crashes for any intersection in Macomb Township, according to SEMCOG data for 2007-11.

With an average of 42 crashes per year since 2007, the intersection at Garfield and Hall Road is one of the most dangerous in Macomb Township, according to crash data collected by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).

While personal experience provides every motorist with his or her own list of the most dangerous intersections, SEMCOG uses annual crash data to analyze which crossroads cause drivers the most problems and why.

In some cases it is alcohol or red-light running that causes the accident, but in most cases it is driver error that is to blame – specifically when the driver is in the 16 to 24, or 65 and older age bracket, according to SEMCOG. Of the accidents at the Garfield-Hall Road intersection from 2007 to 2011, 44 percent involved young drivers, defined as those age 16 to 24.

While Macomb Township motorists probably expected four of the top 10 highest-frequency crash locations to include Hayes Road intersections, it may come as a surprise that the 22 Mile and Romeo Plank intersection doesn't crack the top 10, but instead ties for 15th.

Intersections with major thoroughfares and mile roads had the most accidents, according to SEMCOG, but side streets do come into play starting at No. 28, where an average of 11 accidents occur per year in the intersection of Hayes Road at Lakeside Boulevard.
