"Mary's Buttons," a movie made in Michigan (including Macomb County) and featuring local talent (including some Grosse Pointe actors) will be premiering Feb. 24, with four showings planned.
"Mary's Buttons" is based on a true story, where a Macomb County sheriff was shot and killed at the hand of a 14-year-old son of a Belgian immigrant farm family, due to a misunderstanding. The death caused an uproar, and the teen's mother was put on trial for murder. The film is set in 1910, but its issues with immigration and fair trials resonate just as much today.
The screenplay was written by the Belgian woman's grandson, Ray Govaere, and great-granddaughter, Charlene Govaere. It has been nominated for several awards at the Uptown Film Festival, including Best Michigan Feature Film and Best Screenplay.

The grand premiere will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the East China Performing Arts Center, 1585 Meisner Road, East China. Two additional showings are planned there as well: 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.
The last local showing will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the Armstrong Performing Arts Center, 24600 F.V. Pankow Blvd., Clinton Township.
