Booming Business Pushes Baker Aerospace to Expand into Neighboring Buildings

The Macomb Township company, which is currently receiving a tax break through Michigan's tool and die Renaissance Recovery Zone Act, was approved by the board to expand its operations into two more properties off 23 Mile Road.

A resolution to approve the expansion of Baker Aerospace Tooling & Machining Inc.’s tool and die recovery zone was approved by the township board Wednesday.

The green light allows Baker the ability to operate at two nearby properties near its headquarters on Corporate Drive, off 23 Mile Road, while receiving a tax break through Michigan’s tool and die Renaissance Recovery Zone Act.

Recovery zones were established by the state government in 2004 to help the struggling tool and die industry. Qualifying businesses must receive approval from local governments before they are allowed to establish a recovery zone.

Trustee Roger Krzeminski told fellow board members he had toured the business recently and applauded their growth efforts.

In recent years, Baker has almost tripled its workforce and invested $1.5 million in a new 42,000-square-foot building in their industrial park and another $1.4 million in an older facility.

“In 2009, we were on the ropes, but through reinvestment, we’re turning the whole company around and landing entire build projects, so we’re not just doing one section of tooling, we’re actually doing the whole thing,” co-owner Scott Baker told Patch in a previous interview. “We’re bringing typically out-of-state work here.”

Supervisor Mark Grabow called Baker one of the township’s “diamonds” and commended the business on its efforts to hire Macomb Township residents.

Baker Aerospace Tooling & Machining is located south of 23 Mile Road, just west of Romeo Plank. Transitioning from automotive to aerospace, Baker deals in both defense and commercial work.
