Gas Prices Pass $4 a Gallon, Not Expected to Hit $5

There will be plenty of pain at the pump this week as gas prices pass the $4 mark and head toward last May's record high, when Michigan's average price per gallon hit $4.26.

The bad news? Gas has passed $4 a gallon in Macomb.

The good news? AAA says the rumor that prices will hit $5 a gallon this summer is just a myth.

On Tuesday, the Speedway station at Romeo Plank and Hall Road topped out Macomb's gas prices at $4.15 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline. The lowest gas price, at $3.85 a gallon, was found at the at 24 Mile and Garfield.

While the national average stands at $3.87 per gallon, the state average is right at the $4 mark, and rising, according to MichiganGasPrices.com.

We recently asked Macomb Patch readers on Facebook what they thought of the upward surge. Here's what some of them had to say:

  • Krystal Stone If they think the economy is bad now....with the ever increasing gas prices draining everyones disposable income. Business and retail is going to continue to tank.
  • Denise Koral Zieja Wonderful, I love to spend my entire pay check on gas!
  • Jennifer Kozlowski Green Makes me sick to my stomach. Why does it seem when gas is expensive it burns faster?
  • Cyndee Miller Regan Hate it. Just picked up a part time job to help make ends meet.

While gas will likely remain above $4 a gallon in the near future, the AAA Mid-Atlantic Office, based out of Philadelphia, reports that, "Unless Israel and the United States strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, and then that's the doomsday scenario" gas prices will average $3.75-$4.25 per gallon this spring and will not reach $5.
