Kowalski Deli to Sell Last Sausage Nov. 21, Sweetheart Bakery to Also Close on Hall Road

Serving as the neighborhood deli and bakery for more than 30 years, Kowalski Deli and Sweetheart Bakery on Hall Road and Hayes will close for good next week.

Kowalski Sausage Company has announced it is closing its four metro Detroit delis, including the Macomb Township store at 15385 Hall Road. Sweetheart Bakery, which shares the store with Kowalski, will also close.

The local deli has been serving up sausage for more than 30 years but will shut its doors for good Nov. 21. Sweetheart Bakery's Warren and Harper Woods locations will remain open.

Store manager Tammy Kotcher said customers will be able to buy Kowalski products elsewhere, but added that she’s still sad to see the store close.

“We will all miss our customers and that’s the saddest part,” Kotcher said. “You get to know each other and some of our customers we see once a week.”

The other delis, located in Warren, Westland, and Hamtramck, will close as well. Each location employs about five workers.

Kowalski co-owner Linda Kowalski Jacob told The Detroit Free Press yesterday that the company has shifted its focus. In recent years, Kowalski acquired salad and dip maker Home Style Foods and Dudak Foods, a maker of pierogi, potato pancakes and other traditional Polish fare.

“Over the past several years, we have been growing the company from just a meat company into, really, a refrigerated food business,” she told the Free Press.

Founded by Polish immigrants in 1920, Kowalski has two production plants in Hamtramck and employs about 140 workers, according to the Free Press.

Products are available at most major grocery stores in the area, including Meijer, Vince & Joe's Gourmet Market and Randazzo Fresh Market.
