Macomb Tax Abatements Keep PTI Engineered Plastics Expanding

The Macomb Township-based PTI Engineered Plastics will add $5 million in equipment an 80 jobs in the next two years thanks to a recent tax abatement from the township.

will be able to create another 80 jobs and make almost $5 million in building improvements and equipment additions now that Macomb Township has approved the company for a 12-year tax abatement.

The Macomb Township board of trustees approved an industrial facilities exemption certificate, or tax abatement, for the Macomb-based company during its Wednesday meeting.

This is the second abatement the township has granted PTI, which supplies the medical and automotive industries. With the first abatement, PTI was able to build its facility at 50900 Corporate Dr., off 23 Mile Road, in Macomb and hire 164 employees.

PTI is now at 180 employees and with the new abatement plans to add another 80 jobs in the next two years.

“Construction took place in 2008 when things really started turning south and without motivation like this tax, which has helped tremendously with the budgets, we may not have pulled through,” said James Kaiser, chief financial officer of PTI. “We made a proviso that if we couldn’t get the abatement we wouldn’t buy the land.”

With the help of the current abatement, PTI plans to invest $3.11 million in new machinery, equipment, furniture and fixtures and another $1.7 million in building improvements.

“Things are moving well and (the abatement) is a good incentive,” Kaiser said. “Macomb has been a very good place to operate. They’ve been very good to us.”

Provided PTI does not appeal the assessed or taxable value of its property during the time the certificate is in effect, or move outside the township, the abatement will remain in effect for 12 years.

When other Tier 2 industries reliant on Michigan's automotive companies saw production fall during the recession, Kaiser said PTI’s diverse services helped it maintain a steady stream of clients and demand.

“We took the medical-automotive position some 20 years ago when we started,” Kaiser said. “We didn’t lose services because of the automotive industry. We were ahead of the curve. 2009 was a very tough year, but we came through it. And now we’re adding on.”
