Suburban Ice Celebrates 7 Years in Macomb With Free Family Fun Day

The ice arena is inviting families from Macomb Township and surrounding communities to celebrate its 7th birthday Sunday with free skating, hockey clinics, food, raffles and more.

When opened its doors in 2005, it did so as the first of several commercial developments planned for the . Unfortunately, with the economic downturn, those plans never materialized and seven years later, the arena remains the only non-government building in the area.

That Suburban Ice has not only survived but expanded many of its program offerings during challenging economic times can be credited almost entirely to the continued support of the Macomb Township community.

And now to thank those families that have made the arena success, Suburban Ice is hosting a seventh birthday party to which the entire community is invited.

The party starts at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, and runs until 5 p.m., with free food, activities and of course, open skating and hockey clinics throughout the day.

Families will have two windows for open skate – 11:45 p.m. to 1:05 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. – with a figure skating performance scheduled to take place in between.

The arena will serve free hot dogs from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and children will have the opportunity to snap a photo aboard the SIM Zamboni from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Now home to four high school hockey teams and countless youth hockey leagues, learn-to-skate programs and figure skating classes, Suburban Ice has become a major part of the local sports scene.

It will continue encouraging the next generation of NHL stars by hosting a free “Give Hockey a Try” clinic as part of its birthday activities as well. Girls and boys ages 12 and younger are invited to learn the basics of the sport and test the game hands-on with Suburban Ice instructors. Parents can register their child for this clinic by calling the Suburban Ice office at 586-992-8600.

The birthday celebration will also include a Macomb Hockey Club “Demo Day,” during which MHC players will be provided free ice time and the chance to test the newest Warrior sticks and goal equipment on the market. This demo is open to all MHC players from 2:45 p.m. to 6:05 p.m. Sunday.

Special raffle prizes and drawings will also be held throughout the day.

Suburban Ice is located at 54755 Broughton Road, just off 25 Mile Road, east of Romeo Plank.
