Walsh College and Macomb Community College Sign Reverse Transfer Agreement

Walsh College has become the first private college in Michigan to sign a reverse transfer agreement with Macomb Community College, enabling students to earn their associate degree while pursuing a higher-level business degree at Walsh.

The agreement facilitates transfer of credits from Walsh back to Macomb, allowing students to meet the requirements required for a Macomb associate degree, earning an additional academic credential.

Previously, some students transferred from Macomb to Walsh with an appropriate number of credits, but prior to fulfilling requirements for an associate’s degree. Now, eligible students can earn credit for the associate degree while pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Walsh.

With the transfer agreement, eligible students can graduate with both an associate degree from Macomb and a bachelor’s degree from Walsh, if requirements are met. A minimum of 60 semester hours of coursework must be taken for transfer.

“The agreement strengthens our long-standing partnership with Macomb Community College in preparing business students with quality academic programs. We share a commitment to student success,” said Stephanie Bergeron, president and CEO, Walsh College. “It represents a win for transferring Macomb students who will graduate from Walsh with an additional academic credential that can potentially increase their value in the job market.”

“This kind of cooperation between institutions is increasingly important to the future of higher education,” said Macomb President Dr. James Jacobs, Ph.D. “Our agreement with Walsh will make the educational experience more efficient and valuable to the students of each school. This is the kind of creative partnership Macomb is always looking to form.”

Walsh and Macomb have agreed to maintain the integrity of their separate programs and enter the agreement as equal partners.

Under the agreement, both schools have agreed to establish appropriate criteria to identify eligible students, share student information in compliance with guidelines, and develop a method to track participation and results, and document administrative elements supporting the initiative.

Walsh College and Macomb have been partners since 1970. About 40 percent of Walsh undergraduate students now come from MCC.  Macomb has consistently accounted for the highest number of all enrolled undergraduate students every academic year for at least the past 10 years, and the number of students from Macomb has been steadily increasing. Since 1991, nearly 2,000 Walsh bachelor degree graduates were first admitted to MCC.

Bergeron and Dr. Jacobs marked the agreement in a ceremonial signing ceremony on June 9. Walsh plans to enter into reverse transfer agreements with all of its primary community college partners by year’s end.
