Walsh College Announces New, Enhanced MBA, MS Graduate Programs

Walsh College is enhancing its highly regarded Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science (MS) graduate degree programs to focus on the changing needs of students and employers. The programs begin in fall 2014.

A Walsh MBA prepares graduates for positions in mid- to upper-level management by providing interdisciplinary business studies and an enterprise-wide approach. It also emphasizes business communication skills now demanded by employers, helping graduates explain concepts and share knowledge more concisely.

The new MBA, modeled on the programs of the top 10 part-time MBA programs in the U.S., consists of 42 student credit hours. Early-in-program classes will be offered in sequence, using Walsh’s innovative “2+2” delivery method -- two hours in classroom, two hours online. Subsequent courses will be available in 2+2, online, or on-campus in a traditional format.

Walsh also offers a series of Master of Science (MS) programs for students seeking a strong focus in five areas:  FinanceInformation TechnologyInformation Technology LeadershipManagement, and Marketing.

The multiple concentrations within these programs include Financial Management, Financial Services, and Financial Economics; Chief Security Officer, Chief Information Officer, and Project Management Office; Human Resources Management, International Business, and Strategic Management.

MS programs may be taken separately, requiring 35 to 39 student credit hours. Students wishing to complete both an MBA and a specialized MS program may complete both degrees in a total of 54 to 60 student credit hours.

The MS degree programs share essential courses with the MBA program to allow for greater focus and efficiency. Thus, the MS can function as a “super-concentration.”

The innovative Master of Science in Information Technology has specific focus on Cybersecurity, Chief Information Officer Studies, and Project Management. In addition, a new Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is introduced.

“Walsh students seek a rigorous, respected academic program delivered efficiently and effectively,” said Dr. David Shields, executive vice president and chief academic officer.
“We aspire to be the preferred educational institution for students, employers, and the communities we serve. We’ve enhanced our MBA and MS offerings while increasing their quality and relevance in the educational marketplace.”

Dr. Shields added the Walsh graduate programs strive for quality in practice in four ways -- transforming practitioners into professionals; facilitating understanding; enabling theory, practice, and application; and instructing at strategic, operational, and tactical levels.

The degree enhancements cement Walsh’s leadership as one of Michigan’s largest graduate business schools, said Stephanie Bergeron, president and CEO, Walsh College.

“Our partnership with business leaders, employers, and the community help us anticipate and respond to student- and business-market needs,” she said. “Along with a leading-edge educational delivery system, the changes to our MBA and MS programs will strengthen the desirability and value of a Walsh graduate degree for both students and employers.”

The restructuring also benefits students through greater class availability at Walsh campuses in Troy and Novi. More than 90 percent of Walsh students attend part-time and have other jobs or responsibilities. The average age of graduate students is 34.
