Walsh College Faculty Member Receives Fulbright Scholar Award

Dr. James C. McHann Jr., professor of Management, Organizational Learning and Change, at Walsh College, has been selected for a Fulbright Award in India at Berhampur University during the fall 2013 semester, according to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

McHann will give a lecture series to postgraduate and Ph.D. students in the department of business administration and conduct a series of seminars that will also include faculty from the College of Commerce and Management Sciences at Berhampur University. He will represent the USA and Walsh College through various contacts he will have with the academic and business community in India.

McHann is one of a select group of U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad this year as Fulbright Scholars, and is the fourth scholar from Walsh College. The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

McHann’s lectures at Berhampur University will focus upon an approach to strategic leadership and management that builds human capitaleven while it increases the organization’s capacity to learn, adapt, change, continually reinvent itself, and achieve a sustained competitive advantage in the quest to successfully serve the needs of customers.

Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement. McHann has taught in the management department at Walsh College since 2007. He has worked as a management consultant and served as the president of two institutions of higher education. Earlier this year he was nominated for a U.S. Professor of the Year award. In 2011, he served as a Visiting Scholar in the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2010 he completed a postdoctorate in management in the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University. He holds a Ph.D. from King’s College, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Mississippi College. He grew up in Jackson, Miss. and at various times lived and worked in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

During the Fulbright Award’s 60 years of existence, thousands of U.S. faculty and professionals have taught, studied or conducted research abroad, and thousands of their counterparts from other countries have engaged in similar activities in the United States. Emerging leaders in their professional fields have received Fulbright awards, including individuals who later became heads of government, Nobel Prize winners, and leaders in education, business, journalism, the arts and other fields.
