Local Ob/Gyn Using Facebook/Twitter for Patient Education ...with 'Simple Answers'

Local physician from Eastside Gynecology Obstetrics using social media outlets to reach patients in creative, informative and modern ways.

Hi All!

I'm local Ob/Gyn with a newfound passion for using social media outlets for patient education, and I am currently using Facebook and Twitter for daily postings on Reproductive Health concerns/answers, and topics involving Women's Health.

Since the beginning of my medical training, nearly 20 years ago, I have always felt passionate about patient education and a patient's "right to know." In my early years of training, it seemed strangely unjust to me to hear a patient say things like, "I don't know why I'm having (i.e. test, bloodwork, procedure) done...my doctor told me to." Though patient education (either self-motivated, or by improved resources, and physician training) has greatly improved over the years, in my everyday practice, it's still important for me to give patients the opportunity to "know."

There are two languages in medicine...the medically technical...and then there's the art of just "conversing" with people. My patients (and I) prefer the latter, and have always complimented me on taking the time to explain to them their condition/questions/concerns. If my patients appreciate my explanations/answers "in person:...I'm sure there are many others out there who would appreciate the same dialogue "on the web."

In general, I select a topic to post based on a topic/question that's come up in the office that day, while seeing patients. As an Ob/Gyn there's an array of topics to potentially be addressed in the areas of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health... and patient questions are what stimulate my postings.
