5 Things to Know Today: June 10

T-minus one day to the weekend and we've got news to take you through.

Friday is the last "Things to Know" list of the week, but we're not going to leave you hanging over the weekend. Check out our to find fun activities for Saturday and Sunday. We'll be back Monday.

  1. After several days of drought-like conditions, the rain is back and it's bringing mercifully cooler temperatures. Showers and thunderstorms are likely after noon with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. The high looks to be around 71 degrees, with a low around 60 degrees thanks to mostly cloudy skies. A thunderstorm after midnight is also likely, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: gleich, meaning the same, is an adjective pronounced [glikh]. But remember, the German "ch" is made in the back of the throat like a kitty coughing up a hair ball–grotesque, but true.
  3. In case you missed yesterday's breaking news alert, here's the 411. The suspect in the Feb. 23 stabbing of a 69-year-old Macomb Township woman appeared in court yesterday to hear the evidence presented against him by the prosecution. .
  4. Whoosh. On this day in 1948, Chuck Yeager exceeded the speed of sound in the Bell XS-1. If you get the urge to try to break his record on Hall Road ...  suppress it. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office won't like it.
  5. Before you head out the door, be sure to check our construction column. Every week, we update this column with the latest news on construction projects featuring our local roads and highways. We'll tell you what roads are freshly paved and open for use and which ones you want to avoid.
