Five Things to Know Today: June 14 (Flag Day)

  1. Today's weather is sort of the "to be continued ..." of Monday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 72 degrees. However, as evening creeps in the temperature will post a low around 51 degrees with partly cloudy skies, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: (das) Zimmer, meaning room, is a noun pronounced [tzimmer]. 
  3. A public comment session is being held at 9:30 a.m. today to allow Macomb County residents to voice their opinion on the 2011 Macomb County Organization Plan recently introduced by the Office of the County Executive. The session will be held in the Board of Commissioners Chambers, ninth floor, Macomb County Administration Building, 1 S. Main, Mount Clemens.   4. According to IRS records, 11 Macomb Township nonprofits have had their tax-exempt status revoked as a result of a 2006 change in federal law. While some of these organizations are now defunct, others must now work with the IRS to have their status reinstated. 
  5. In addition to being Flag Day, today is also a big day is music history. On this day in 1953, Elvis Presley graduated from L.C. Humes High School in Memphis, TN; in 1961, Patsy Cline sustained serious head injuries and a fractured hip in a car accident in Madison, TN; in 1965, Paul McCartney recorded "Yesterday"; in 1965, Bob Dylan recorded "Like A Rolling Stone"; in 1969, Mick Taylor was introduced as the new guitarist for the Rolling Stones; and in 1970, Eric Clapton's band, "Derek and The Dominoes," made their live debut in Britain.
