Five Things to Know Today: June 3

Guaranteed to sweeten your Friday.

Before you check out for the weekend, be sure to peruse these five things you need to know:

  1. Michiganders will never be able to have their cake and eat it, too, and today's weather is a perfect example of that fact. There will be a glorious high temperature near 71 degrees, but it will be mostly cloudy throughout the day. There is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning/afternoon, which increases to 40 percent in the evening, according to the National Weather Service
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day. Only instead of a word, today we're upgrading to a phrase: Gott sei Dank, es ist Freitag! This translates, roughly, to T.G.I.F. Pronunciation: [got] [sey] [dank], [es] [ist] [Fri'tak]. The words "Gott" and "Dank" feature short vowels. It helps if you say them with a British accent. "Gott" should not sound like [gat] and "Dank" will never rhyme with "tank."
  3. All hail the seniors! This is the last day of exams for Dakota, Lutheran North and Henry Ford II seniors. Patch will cover the commencement ceremonies for Dakota, and Lutheran North and proud parents are always welcome to post detailing their child's honors on Patch.
  4. Two Macomb Township teens are hosting a walk-a-thon to raise money to bring a Midwest Assistant dog to Michigan for a Harrison Township man who suffers from grand mal seizures. The event is June 12 at Metro Beach, but today is the last day T-shirts designed with the logo, “Helping a friend gain a hero–Walkathon 2011” can be ordered for $10. Contact the organizers at 586-291-6539 or 586-918-2202.
  5. The Anton Art Center's 30th annual art fair starts today in Mount Clemens. Admission to the fair is free and includes displays from local artists and art clubs, nightly entertainment, a carnival hosted by the Mount Clemens Lions Club and the 20th annual Bud Light Car Cruise on Saturday, June 4.
