Five Things to Know Today: June 7

Nifty nuggets of information you can count off on one hand.

If the Internet is the information highway, then Five Things is a rest stop, but not just any rest stop, one of those really cool rest stops with 18 different restaurants, 10 vending machines and a gift shop. Happy traveling:

  1. Water and sunblock are going to be your best friends today, because it's going to be another hot one. The forecast is partly sunny with high temperatures between 85 and 89 degrees, but only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: Alltag, meaning everyday life, is a noun pronounced [all'takh].
  3. This week is "THE" week for activities. From historical days at the Chesterfield Township Historical Village and to free fishing at Metro Beach and Wolcott Mill. There are also car shows, free concerts and a golf outing. You can find times, prices and more in this week's .
  4. Independence Day is July 4, but June 7 is a pretty big day in U.S. history, too. On this day in 1775, the United Colonies changed their name to the United States and one year later, on the same day, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia proposed to the Continental Congress a resolution calling for a Declaration of Independence. If you're not familiar with Lee, try this You Tube clip (4:56) from the musical 1776.
  5. Sorry Coca-Cola fans, next year you will only be able to buy Pepsi in Chippewa Valley schools. A contract with Pepsi was one of several items approved at the June 6 Board of Education meeting.
