Five Things to Know Today (Memorial Day)

A handful of items to spice up your Memorial Day.

Sunshine, barbecue and these five things are all you need to enjoy this Memorial Day:

  1. Happy Memorial Day! Mother Nature is finally giving us poor mortals a break with sunny skies and a high near 87, according to the National Weather Service. Crack out the sunscreen and beach wear, you're going to want to enjoy this weather while you can.
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: nichts, meaning nothing, is a pronoun pronounced [nikts].
  3. Waterloo, NY, was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but the true origins of the holiday have been traced back to the Civil War.
  4. Patch remembers those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation with a video tribute. If not for the awesome soundtrack, then check this video out to learn what celebrations are going on around town.
  5. The end of the school year for public and private schools in Macomb Township is only days away, so here are some need-to-know dates to get you through to summer.
