Get Out: Free Concerts, Time Travel and Fishing Fun

Catch hot wheels and fishing at the metro parks this week as well as free concerts around town, and historical days that will send you back in time.

Enjoy a couple of free concerts:


Where/When: ; 7:30-8:45 p.m. June 7.
Why Go: The Macomb Area Community Band performs its Spring Concert in the Seneca Middle School cafetorium. Hear circus marches, a Glenn Miller medley, Hollywood movie music, and an overture composed by one of the band members.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: , 44575 Garfield Rd., Clinton Township; 7:30 p.m. June 8.
Why Go: It's the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and they're giving a free concert at the Macomb Center of Performing Arts, with DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin leading the orchestra in a program that should appeal to novices and classical music buffs alike. Enjoy hearing the works of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Tchaikovsky as well as Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Macomb Community College professor Philip Barrons will join the orchestra onstage to narrate this special aspect.
Pricing: Free but each order is limited to four tickets. Pick up tickets at the Macomb Center Box Office Monday-Wednesday from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. or order by phone at 586-286-2222. Tickets are limited.

Where/When: Sycamore Hills Golf Club, 48787 North Ave., Macomb Township; 11 a.m. June 10.
Why Go: It's all for(e) a good cause, as the Kiwanis Club of Utica/Shelby is organizing this fun outing at Sycamore Hills. Sign up and enjoy 18 holes, lunch, a four-man scramble, putting contest, dinner and awards.

History buffs should love two opportunities to meander back through time to our Civil War and colonial days:

Where/When: , 4101 River Bends Dr., Shelby Township; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 11, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. June 12.
Why Go: The Shadbush Nature Center invites everyone to enjoy a blast from the past, and find out about life in the 1800s. Living history re-enactor groups will re-create a Civil War Encampment. Discover how women worked and lived, how candles and soap were made, wool was spun and dyed, and how people cooked over a fire. Re-enactors will show how soldiers camped, how equipment was cleaned, and display various artillery. Plus, the cannon is scheduled to be fired at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. both days.


Where/When: Chesterfield Township Historical Society, 47275 Sugarbush; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 11-12.
Why Go: The Chesterfield Township Historical Society is offering a trip to the past as it hosts the Ste. Claire Voyageurs at its Historical Village. The village and the Voyageurs will be in full historical garb, doing live demonstrations of how people lived in the past, during Michigan's fur trade and colonial eras.
Pricing: $1 per person or $2 per family; food and drink will be sold, too.

FAMILY FISHING FUN AT THE METRO PARKS
Where/When: Metro Beach, 11 a.m. June 11; and Wolcott Mill, noon-4 p.m. June 11.
Why Go: Catch your own fish tales with family fun fishing days at the Metro Park of your choosing.
Pricing: Free, except for park admission, which is normally $5 for a daily car pass.

  • First, Metro Beach is offering Family Fishing Fun Day at the Nature Center, where kids will be provided equipment and shown the ropes for fishing. Event is free with park entry, but be sure to preregister. Click for details.
  • Or, head to Wolcott Mill Historic Center, for "Take Me Fishing" fun. Kids will learn the basics of fishing, including knot tying, making a lure, how to cast a line, identifying fish and more. Free with park entry. Preregistration required. Click for details.


Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark; 8 a.m.-dusk June 12.
Why Go: Enjoy the 14th Annual Blast from the Past Car Show, with classic, antique and muscle cars; street rods and low riders; plus live music in the evening. Talk to car buffs and club members and find out how they feed their passion for hot wheels.
Pricing: Free, except for park admission, which is normally $5 for a daily car pass.
