Happening This Week: Festivals, Outdoor Concerts and Dessert Sushi

Need some time on the midway? Check. A free concert outdoors? Check. There's plenty to do this week.

No case of the Mondays this week with the July 4 holiday. Start off your week by squeezing a bit more weekend out of your three-day weekend with a festival fun as the Algonac Pickerel Tournament and the Stars and Stripes Festival in downtown Mount Clemens wind up on Independence Day.


Where/When: Downtown Algonac, roughly at Smith and Michigan streets, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. July 4.
Why Go: This is day five of the fest, but there's still plenty of fun to be had, including carnival rides, bingo, an arts and crafts show in Riverfront Park, a watermelon-eating contest and, of course, the fishing tournament.
Pricing: Free to attend. Rides, etc., will cost you.

Where/When: Downtown Mount Clemens, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. July 4.
Why Go: Free concerts on four stages (unless you chose the VIP route), a carnival, petting zoo, poker, pony rides, a Vegas tent, the Meijer Family Fun Zone and much more is planned to amuse everyone and anyone.

Where/When: , 7-8:30 p.m. July 7.
Why Go: It's time for "Sizzlin' Summer Nights" in the park. Every Thursday in July there will be a concert in the Macomb Town Center Park. Tonight's act is the "As-Is" Band. Bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy live music outdoors. There will also be a dance floor set up so anyone inclined can cut a rug and kids can enjoy fun in the KiDzOnE inflatables, games and more. Concessions will be available.

Where/When: , 44575 Garfield, Clinton Township, 2 p.m. July 8.
Why Go: Discover our area's talented seniors at the 2011 Annual Senior Show at The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. Titled "Musical Memories of the 20th Century," showgoers will enjoy a wide variety of entertainment, including drama, music and song and comedy. There's something for everyone here.
Pricing: $13 in advance, $16 at the door.


Where/When: Downtown Mount Clemens, on the riverfront along Northbound Gratiot between Crocker and Dickinson, 7 p.m. July 8.
Why Go: Enjoy a free concert on the Riverfront Park in Mount Clemens. Tonight's act: Badfinger.


Where/When: 44425 Utica Road, Utica, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. July 9-10.
Why Go: Ready to go antiquing? Browse thousands of unique items at the Utica Antiques Market, which is held at the Knights of Columbus Grounds off 21 Mile Road in Utica.

Why Go: Sushi? Maybe. Dessert? Definitely! Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to the North Branch of the library to make delicious sushi using candy and other sweets.

Where/When: Wolcott Mill Historic Center, 64162 Kunstman Road, Ray Township, 1-4 p.m. July 10.
Why Go: In a week loaded with history lessons, here's another one. This one celebrates the pioneer days when Michigan's forests were still being settled and people were clearing the land and readying it for farming. Attend the Sawdust Festival and get insights into that era by seeing the work these pioneers had to do, from dipping candles to sawing huge trees.
Pricing: $4 per person, ages 6 and up.
