Macomb in a Nutshell: June 15

Crack into today's news, weather and a few old-fashioned fun facts.

Wednesday: The eldest child in the Addams Family, or the halfway point of the five-day work week. You choose your favorite definition, but know that we will judge you for it regardless.

  1. Leave the jackets in your closets ladies and gents, today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 74 degrees. It might be a touch windy, but then again, perfection is overrated. In the evening there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and it will become mostly cloudy, with a low around 59 degrees, according to the National Weather Service
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: (das) Saft, meaning juice, is a noun pronounced [saft]. Try to rein in your Midwestern instinct and pronounce the "a" with an "ah" sound more than an "ay."
  3. How do you feel about free? If you are favorable to the term, you probably want to check out This Week's Deals to Save Macomb Moola. From Father's Day steak dinners to coffees and snacks, lots of local deals make good use of the word "free."
  4. By the light ... of the strawberry moon ... Wait a minute, that's not how the song goes. Well, we're taking creative liberties with this popular barbershop number to highlight the tonight. This event is open to ages 8 and up and features a guided canoe trip, where an interpreter will teach everyone about the strawberry moon, and a themed snack.
  5. On this day in 1752, Benjamin Franklin experimented by flying a kite during a thunderstorm. The result was a little spark that showed the relationship between lightning and electricity. Patch readers are asked not to try this at home.
