Macomb in a Nutshell: June 23

  1. Grab your bumpershoots (umbrellas) the National Weather Service is predicting showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 a.m. We'll see a high near 74 degrees, but cloudy skies for most of the day and wind gusts as high as 21 mph. On second thought, grab a raincoat and leave the bumpershoot at home. The clouds continue into evening and the temperature will hit a low around 59. Expect rain on and off all day today.
  2. In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: verspätet, meaning late, is an adjective pronounced [ver-shpaytet].
  3. The Macomb Township Board of Trustees approved the 2011-12 budget and took special care to clarify that any perceived shortfall (last projected at $11 million) is seen as just that–a projection. While Macomb's expenditures in 2011-12 will exceed its revenue, Supervisor Mark Grabow said the township's fund balance will continue to be "one of the healthiest" in the state.
  4. The case surrounding the Feb. 23 stabbing of a Macomb Township woman moved forward yesterday with the testimony of Macomb resident Thomas Kosciolek, whose identification of the suspect, Joseph Reiner, places him in the area of the attack near the time of the attack.
  5. The St. Isidore Strawberry Festival starts tomorrow. It runs Friday through Sunday and features a car show, game tent, ethnic dinners and all the strawberry desserts you can imagine. A full schedule of the weekend's activities is available .
