Rep. Goike Trades Bills for Drills at Macomb Habitat Build

Macomb Township's Rep. Ken Goike joined other local officials and legislators in Eastpointe Thursday to help with a Macomb Habitat for Humanity build.

Sporting jeans and toting a power drill, State Rep. Ken Goike (R-Macomb Township) joined other local legislators Thursday in Eastpointe to assist on a build with Macomb Habitat for Humanity.

Goike, along with Sen. Steve Bieda, Mayor Suzanne Pixley and Rep. Jon Switalski worked as part of the Legislators Building Communities (LBC), an effort to "mobilize and engage legislators, state officials and volunteers in hundreds of affordable housing and community development projects throughout Michigan," according to Macomb Habitat.

The LBC is led by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HFHM) and the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM).

The goal of the LBC is to enlist each Michigan legislator in a hands-on project in their home district. The projects range from landscaping and construction, to painting and neighborhood cleanups.

LBC "sends a signal to the rest of the legislature that taking care of people, making sure they have a roof over their head and the services they need to stay housed, is not a Republican or a Democrat issue, it's not a conservative or a liberal issue, it's something we all need to get behind and work together on," said Rep. Rebekah Warren of Ann Arbor, legislative co-chair, in a release.
