Today's News Fast: Sept. 5 (Labor Day)

Happy Labor Day! Today the government demands you sit back, relax and read Patch. OK, so maybe the last part is just a strong suggestion.

  • The Labor Day holiday is "dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country," according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.
  • The economy leaves much to be desired, but it is a holiday, so we're looking on the bright side and breaking down the progress Macomb has made in the last 10 years. It's good news, promise.
  • Macomb's public and private school students return to class Tuesday, but there are still summer-esque events for your family to enjoy. We have fun for the entire week right here.
  • Most government offices and businesses are closed today. Here's a list of closed agencies to make your life that much easier.
  • In recognition of Macomb Township's German roots, we bring you the German Word of the Day: überzeugen, meaning to persuade, is a verb pronounced [ewber-zoygen].
