Young Library Patron Wins $1,500 in Summer Reading Sweepstakes

Macomb resident Abbie Phelps, 9, won $1,500 in the Destination College Savings Sweepstakes, offered in conjunction with the Clinton-Macomb Public Library's summer reading program.

Nine-year-old Abbie Phelps is now $1,500 closer to college after winning the Destination College Savings Sweepstakes.

Sponsored by the Library of Michigan Foundation, the Michigan Education Savings Program and the Michigan Education Trust, the sweepstakes were offered by several Michigan libraries in conjunction with their summer reading programs.

Phelps, a Macomb resident who participated in the 's summer reading program, was selected as one of 12 children to win a $1,500 cash prize that can be used toward future college education.

As the host program of a winner, the CMPL will also receive a $1,000 grant to fund future summer reading programs.

“It is always gratifying to see children reading throughout the summer,” said Library Director Larry Neal. “And with our uncertain economy, the chance to win $1,500 was definitely an incentive to anyone saving for their child’s college education. We are also thrilled with the $1,000 prize, which will go a long way toward enhancing our future programs.”

The 2011 Summer Reading Program is offered to encourage children to continue to read through the summer. This year's program saw a 20 percent increase in participation.
