Did you know you may be eligible to write off your pet(s) on your taxes? If you currently foster a pet, you may be eligible to deduct the non-reimbursed expenses you have purchased for your pet.

Here is some interesting news for pet owners ... Did you know you may be eligible to write off us pets on your taxes?

The Wall Street Journal reported a story of a woman, Jan Van Dusen of Oakland, CA, who obtained expense reimbursement from the IRS for her care of 70 stray cats.

However, there are specific requirements and guidelines to follow.

If you currently foster a pet, you may be eligible to deduct the non-reimbursed expenses you have purchased for your pet. You must obtain a letter from the charity acknowledging the donation, and the organization must also be a 501(c)(3) charity registered with the IRS.

Some items eligible for tax reimbursement include vet bills, pet food and gas to transport pet appoints and to meet pet adopters.

Here are a few tips from Pawesome.net on how to keep up on your foster pet's tax aided items:

  • Keep all your receipts associated with foster care
  • Write a note on the receipts to specify what item was bought and for what purpose
  • As of now, the only tax-deductible purchases are for foster pets, not resident pets
