Solar Powered Sprinklers Installed at New Haven High School

NEW HAVEN, MI – A crew of students from the Renewable Energy Program at New Haven High School were digging in the dirt to install three zones of solar powered sprinklers in front of New Haven High School. A solar cell and storage battery were attached to the sprinkler system to open and close the valves. “This is a great final activity for the school year,” said Felisicia Holifield, coordinator of the Renewable Energy Program. “Everything we’ve learned about renewable energy can be used through this hands-on application of solar power.”

Students worked out every detail of the project. They worked with maintenance people on the location of existing sprinklers and how the system works. They arranged for Miss Dig to come before digging for new water and power lines. An electrician and excavator worked with them to properly set up the construction area. Then, the true fun began! Time to help dig the holes and run underground wiring for the sprinkler system.

The system was completed the last week of school. The next project is a solar powered electric car charging station. For information on the Renewable Energy Program at New Haven Community Schools, call 586-749-5123.
