To the Editor:
I am proud to be a resident of Michigan because of the state’s commitment to clean renewable energy. Renewable wind energy is an important part of what’s powering Michigan by providing pollution-free energy that keeps our economy going and our air clean, while creating jobs in clean energy production and manufacturing right here in our state.
Investment in wind power is both economically and environmentally advantageous as it is an investment in jobs and an investment in the health of the environment. Wind energy production creates jobs in many sectors including operations, maintenance, construction and manufacturing. Wind energy production is also environmentally sound as it creates no emissions and uses virtually no water. The wind power installed in Michigan alone avoids 930,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
However for wind energy to be feasible it must be made affordable. The renewable energy production tax credit (PTC) and the offshore wind investment tax credit (ITC) will do just that. But these critical clean energy tax credits expire at the end of this year unless Congress acts. Michigan’s U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow should support extending the PTC and ITC as soon as possible to ensure not only job creation but also a cleaner, healthier future for Michiganders.
