Detroit Men Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Gas at Macomb Mobile Station

Javion Dewain-Deante Morris, 23, and Anthony Rayshawn Leak, 33, are accused of stealing approximately 100 gallons of gas from the station at Hall Road and Heydenreich by jamming the satellite system used to process credit card payments.

Two Detroit men are facing multiple felony charges for allegedly stealing around 100 gallons of gas from the Mobile gas station at Hall Road and Heydenreich in Macomb Township.

Javion Dewain-Deante Morris, 23, and Anthony Rayshawn Leak, 33, were arrested shortly after midnight Thursday, Sept. 20, and arraigned via video Thursday afternoon in the 41-A District Court in Shelby Township.

Both men were in possession of marijuana at the time of their arrest, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Morris faces charges of controlled substance–delivery and manufacture of marijuana, a four-year felony and/or $20,000; interfering with electronic communications, a two-year felony and/or $1,000 fine; and attempted resisting and obstructing a police officer, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.

Leak also faces charges of controlled substance–delivery and manufacture of marijuana and interfering with electronic communications, in addition to one count of financial transaction device-stealing/retaining without consent, a two-year felony and/or $1,000 fine.

Sheriff's deputies were alerted to the theft shortly after midnight Thursday when a clerk at the gas station reported he heard someone on the roof. When deputies arrived, they found the two men attempting to leave the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies stopped the men's vehicle and further investigation revealed the two suspects had attempted to commit fraud by interrupting the satellite feed for the station's credit card processing system by placing aluminum foil over the rooftop dish.

The aluminum foil scrambles the outgoing transmission of the credit card data being processed, Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said. While one suspect covered the satellite dish with aluminum foil, the other swiped a credit card at the pump and began filling gas into 20 five-gallon gas cans.

Morris’ bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety, while Leak’s bond was set at 10 percent of $5,000, according to the sheriff's office.

The men are currently being held at the Macomb County Jail.

This is the first I've heard of satellite jamming, but the sheriff's office said it is a fairly common practice. Had you heard of it before this story?

According to the sheriff's office, the men were filling (20) 5-gallon tanks with gas. That totals 100 gallons.
