Group Home Resident Faces Murder Charge in Death of Worker He Allegedly Slapped
Mary Lou Potter, 71, became ill at her home and died later at a local hospital, two days after a group home resident allegedly slapped her, causing her to fall back onto a bed.
A man who lives in a Macomb Township group home is accused of slapping a 71-year-old direct care worker last month, causing her death a couple of days later.
Charlie Weskalnies, 54, was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge Wednesday in 41A District Court in Shelby Township, the Detroit Free Press reports. A competency exam will be conducted to determine if he will stand trial.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said Mary Lou Potter, 71, of Clinton Township became ill at her home on Feb. 8 and was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

The county medical examiner’s office said the cause of death is pending, but the Michigan Caregivers Conference web site, which tracks worker deaths, said Potter died of blunt traumatic head injury after a resident lapped her in the face, causing her to fall back onto a bed, the newspaper said.
