Sheriff Anthony Wickersham initially described the fire as "suspicious in nature." Fire investigation units later determined the cause of the blaze was arson.

Although the home was previously reported as vacant, the sheriff's office reports there were two tenants residing in the home–one was a caregiver to the other. A domestic violence report was made to the sheriff's office earlier Feb. 1.

As to Smith's motive, Wickersham said Smith admitted to police that he set the blaze following an altercation he had with the home's other tenant.

"I think he was just upset at the fact they had altercation earlier in the day," Wickersham said. "I think he wanted to take it out on her, and that's why he set the house on fire."

Wickersham said the suspect did act alone and no charges will be filed against the other tenant.

Detectives arrested Smith on Friday. He was arraigned on two counts of arson and one of domestic violence in 41-A District Court today.

Arson is a 20-year felony in Michigan. The second arson charge–preparation to burn–is a 10-year felony and/or $15,000 fine. The domestic violence charge is a 93-day misdemeanor.
