, the 27-year-old Fraser man charged in connection with the Feb. 23 stabbing of a 69-year-old Macomb Township woman, appeared in 41-A District Court April 14 for his preliminary examination.

Handcuffed to the waist and wearing the blue uniform issued to inmates of the Macomb County Jail, Reiner appeared with his court-appointed attorney, Timothy Barkovic, before Judge Douglas Shepherd.

"At this stage, I still don't have anything in terms of discovery," Barkovic said. "I am reluctantly agreeing to an adjournment and waiver of the preliminary trial."

Barkovic said he is still waiting on the prosecutor's office to deliver discovery, a pretrial method that allows evidence in a case to be obtained from the opposing party.

Reiner only spoke twice, answering, "Yes," to Shepherd's questions of whether he understood what was happening and what waiving his preliminary examination would mean. Two Macomb County Sheriff's deputies escorted Reiner from the courtroom.

Reiner’s three-day crime spree came to an end on Feb. 26 when he was arrested by the New York State police on the Tappan Zee Bridge in Orangetown, NY, after an almost 100-mile car chase that started in Roxbury, NJ.

Upon his arrest in New York, Reiner was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing police, two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, unlawful possession of marijuana, various vehicle and traffic violations and being a fugitive from justice from the state of Michigan, according New York State Police.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department said Reiner forced his way into the home of the 69-year-old woman’s house on the 49000 block of Fairchild in Macomb Township early in the morning on Feb. 23.

After attempting to rob the victim, Reiner allegedly stabbed the woman in the neck with two knives and then fled the scene, police said.

A neighbor of the victim reported that a relative had picked up someone matching Reiner’s description in the 22 Mile and Fairchild area and driven him to 15 Mile and Gratiot.

Reiner eventually ended up in Eastpointe, where he pawned the stolen items, police said.

The victim underwent surgery on Feb. 23 and is continuing to recover.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said Reiner had previously spent four years in prison for home invasion.
