Police Blotter: Drunken Texter Lands in Ditch, Duo Destroys Property

Drunken driver collides with parked van

On Feb. 1, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Macomb County Sheriff's officers responded to a report of a vehicle striking a parked van in the area of Carleton Place and Card roads in Macomb Township.

An eyewitness told police he observed the driver speeding when his vehicle struck the van–which was legally parked and not obstructing the road–and that it appeared the driver continued to press the accelerator even after the collision occurred.

Officers gave the vehicle's driver, a 40-year-old Macomb Township man, a series of sobriety tests, all of which he failed. A preliminary breath test revealed the man had a blood alcohol content of .206. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated with a BAC of .17 or more and transported to the Macomb County Jail where he was housed on a $100 cash/surety bond.

On Feb. 5, at approximately 9:12 p.m., Macomb County Sheriff's officers received a report of a possible drunken driver in the area of 24 Mile and Romeo Plank roads.

Officers stopped the 46-year-old Warren woman on 23 Mile Road east of Card. The woman told police she was coming from a Super Bowl party, where she had been drinking. After failing several sobriety tests, the woman was given a preliminary breath test. She registered a .233 blood alcohol content and was arrested for operating while intoxicated in the first degree.

The woman was taken to the Macomb County Jail and lodged on a $100 bond, according to police.

Duo destroy property, resists arrest

On Feb. 7, approximately 24 minutes after midnight, a Macomb County Sheriff's officer in the area of 46400 Erb Drive observed the rear gate of Motor City Freight Haulers open with a suspicious car parked nearby.

In pulling up to the building, the officer observed two individuals run from the rear of the building to the parked car. The individuals–a 20-year-old Mount Clemens man and 36-year-old Marine City female–gave the officer conflicting stories as to why they were on the property and when the officer attempted to continue questioning the man, he ran.

The officer was able to tackle the man to the ground, but he continued to resist arrest until a second officer warned he would use a taser if he didn't cooperate.

Officers observed the windows of two truck tractors parked in the rear of the building had been smashed and both vehicles had suffered body damage.

A third passenger, a 24-year-old St. Clair Shores man, told police he had heard glass breaking just before the the other two returned to the vehicle and officers arrived on the scene.

The Mount Clemens man was arrested for malicious destruction of property, underage liquor use and resisting arrest, while the woman was arrested for malicious destruction of property and resisting arrest. The two were transported to Macomb County Jail and held without bond. The St. Clair Shores man was not arrested.

Drunken texting lands woman in ditch

On Feb. 8, at approximately 2:34 a.m., Macomb County Sheriff's officers responded to a report of a car in a ditch along 22 Mile Road.

Officers found the vehicle in the north ditch of the 16100 block of 22 Mile Road. The driver, a 21-year-old Utica female was uninjured.

The woman told police she had been drinking and was not planning to drive, but had been left by friends at a nearby bar and had no other way to get home. She also admitted to police she had been attempting to text when her car went into the ditch.

The woman was given a preliminary breath test and registered a .13 blood alcohol content. She was arrested for operating while intoxicated in the first degree and transported to the Macomb County Jail. She was held at the jail on a $100 bond and her license was destroyed.
