Wielding Hatchet, Robbery Suspect Scales Roof, then Smashes Cash Register

The suspect in a gas station robbery became rattled when his movements tripped a burglar alarm and video surveillance system, so he used a fire extinguisher as a battering ram to escape through a glass block window.

A suspect chose an unusual weapon – a hatchet – to rob a Harrison Township gas station, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office officials say.

The suspect scaled the roof of the Boat Town Sunoco station, removed an air handling unit to gain access to the store and then used the hatchet to smash the cash registers. He tripped a motion sensor, activating the burglar alarm and surveillance video system, which captured images of him stealing cash and cigarettes, the Detroit News said.

That reportedly rattled the suspect, who wore a gas mask and gloves. He then used a fire extinguisher to use as a battering ram to break a glass block window in the rear of the store.
