Bridge Construction, Repairs to Cost Macomb $125K Over Next 30 Years

Macomb Township will pay $4,168 a year until 2041 to cover the cost of construction and repairs on the Fairchild over Ahrens Drain and Hayes over Price Brook Drain bridges.

In payment for two projects under the Macomb County Bridge Program, Macomb Township is scheduled to pay $4,168 a year until 2041–a total of $125,040.

In January 2004, Macomb Township entered into an agreement with the county to fund the construction and repairs of four area bridges–Card over North Branch Clinton River, Fairchild over Ahrens Drain, Hayes over Price Brook Drain and Chapman over Deer Creek. The township was contracted to pay $405,625 for this work, while the county would cover the remaining $1,622,500.

The county billed the township for a portion of its share several years ago but suspended the remaining bills until all projects were completed.

Then in 2008, the Chapman bridge was eliminated from the program, with the Card bridge being eliminated this year. With only the Fairchild and Hayes bridges remaining, the township will pay only a fraction of the original cost.

The Macomb Township board of trustees voted last week to resume yearly payments on the projects, which works out to $4,168 a year for roughly the next 30 years.

This amount will cover the townships’ remaining $72,283 share for the Fairchild bridge and $52,757 for the Hayes bridge.
