Viewfinder: Commissioner Vosburg Shares Love of Reading with Atwood Students

Macomb County Board of Commissioners Chair Kathy Vosburg read with local students Thursday in recognition of National Reading Month.

Macomb County Board of Commissioners Chair Kathy Vosburg sat down with third-graders Thursday to read several stories in recognition of National Reading Month.

"I love to read to children because I just love when you’re reading with expression and relating a story to them and they have that smile on their face and they have those 'aha' moments through the story and they know what the end is going to be," Vosburg (R-Chesterfield) said.

Vosburg, who has been reading to local elementary children for more than 10 years, plans to read to four groups of Atwood third-graders on Thursday.

For Vosburg, the act of reading is one she holds very close to her heart.

"I remember as a child myself loving to have people read to me and listening to the lilt and the tones of different people reading to me," she said. "Even when I was in elementary school our teachers read a chapter every day out of a book, so I want to return that to the community because I was grateful to hear people read to me as a child."

One of Vosburg's favorite children's tales is Are You My Mother?, which follows a baby bird on its journey as it visits one animal to another in a search for its mother.

No matter the book or the age one is reading it, Vosburg said she believes  "reading is the lifeline to success in life."

"We need to be able to read for our jobs," she said. "We need to be able to read to get around, find where things are, read instructions for how to use appliances ... just about do everything in life. It's an essential part of life."
