Meeting Minutes: Live-Blog of Wednesday's Board of Trustees Meeting

A disciplinary matter within the fire department, appointments to township boards and commissions, and a temporary turn around for Hidden Meadows Drive are among the issues trustees will discuss at tonight's meeting.

A public hearing to discuss the 2011-12 township budget will also be held during the first public comments session.

7 p.m. – Supervisor Mark Grabow calls the meeting to order and all assembled stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. All members of the board are present, including legal counsel.

7:05 p.m. – Additions to the agenda are a family medical leave of absence, a request to terminate an employee and movement of the fire department's disciplinary matter to executive session. The board will also review the Michigan tax tribunal consent judgement regarding the Park Lane properties on 21/North Avenue.

7:06 p.m. – The public hearing has begun for the Macomb Township budget for the fiscal year 2011-12.

The total expected revenue for the township is $39,413,158, with $51,129,504 in expenditures, leaving the township with a budget shortfall of $11,76,346.

7:14 p.m. – The board has passed the 2011 millage rates as follows: General Operating Mil 0.6757, Fire Operating SAD 1.0588, Fire Pension Mil 0.0747, Police Mil 1.0601 and Parks/Rec Mil 0.8232. Total: 3.6925. This should result in more than $10 million in revenue for the township.

7:18 p.m. – The board will bring back its Waste Management Committee to address the expense of the township's Waste Management Fuel Surcharge.

7:20 p.m. – The township's Human Resources department has been authorized to move forward with hiring an election coordinator to handle next year's elections for the township.

7:25 p.m. – To resolve old township business, the township has had to resurrect the Economic Development Corporation, which was dissolved in 2003. The EDC will consist of the seven members of the Planning Commission and trustees Janet Dunn and Roger Krzeminski. They will meet one time on June 21 to resolve the issue.

7:30 p.m. – The township will award the proposal for workers compensation insurance to the Michigan Municipal League for $110,776.

7:32 p.m. – American Plumbing and Heating will receive the bid to replace the backflow preventer at Fire Station No. 2. They were the only contractor to submit quotes for both labor and parts. 

7:33 p.m. – The board approved the engineer's payment certificate for a replacement at sanitary pump station No. 2. Total: $92,741.

Supervisor's Comments

Requested the board to re-appoint Sal DiCaro (Parks and Recreation director) to the Building Authority Commission until June 2013. Board approved. 

Requested the board re-appoint Dean Ausilio to the Planning Commission until Dec. 31, 2013. Board approved.

Executive Session

The board has authorized legal counsel to sign the consent judgment as presented in a Michigan tax appeal case.

On the recommendation of Fire Chief Robert Phillips, Lt. Charles Callewaert's employment has been terminated with the township.
