Macomb Township Looks to Lease Spare Acres for Crop Production

The land is located south of 24 Mile, east of Card. Bids must be received by the township clerk by 10 a.m. Jan. 8, 2013.

Farmers interested in cultivating land should consider an offer to rent 35.88 acres in Macomb Township.

The field cropland is located south of 24 Mile, east of Card Road. Access to the main road is through a nearby condominium complex.

Macomb Clerk Michael Koehs said the township is accepting bids on the land, which is not in use at this time. The contract agreement, found on the township’s website, is for Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2013.

The bid package containing the lease must be received by the township clerk by 10 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2013. The bid opening is scheduled for Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. in the board room located at the township offices at 54111 Broughton Road.

Renting farmland is not uncommon. The Michigan State University Extension Service reports that an estimated 55.1 percent of field crop acres in the southern lower peninsula were controlled by leases in 2011. As with the entire state, cash rent is the predominant leasing arrangement in Michigan. The average value of tiled field cropland in southern lower peninsula was $3,764 per acre in 2011.

Renters of the Macomb Township property are responsible for tilling the land and should not plant a carryover crop. Whatever the renter does plant has to be reported to the township. For a full list of requirements and bidding instructions, click here

Koehs said that buyers who are interested in using the land for another purpose are welcome to share their ideas with the township, too.

“If there is someone interested in buying that land, we are certainly interested in hearing from them,” he said.
