4 Macomb Students Named Top Scholar Athletes by Detroit Free Press

The four high school seniors are among more than 450 students named top scholar athletes by the Detroit Free Press in 2012.

The 2012 Detroit Free Press' top scholar athletes for , , Eisenhower and Ford high schools all call Macomb Township home.

These students were among more than 450 high school seniors nominated across the state to be recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the athletic field.

In Macomb Township, the honors went to Jack Dischler, of Ford, Craig Pertler, of Chippewa Valley, Hannah Scruggs, of Dakota, and Daniel Venditti, of Eisenhower.

Dischler is the son of Duane and Cheryl Dischler. He graduated from Utica Ford with a 4.1 GPA and will attend Wayne State University in the fall.

Captain of the Ford swim team, Dischler is a two-time Macomb County Swimmer of the Year Award winner, two-time all-state champion for the 500-yard freestyle and one-time all-state champion for the 200-yard freestyle. He is also a National Swim Coaches Association Junior National Qualifier.

On the academic side, he is a scholastic all-American, member of the National Honor Society and recipient of both academic all-American and all-state honors. He graduated magna cum laude and made both the Macomb County All-Academic Team and Macomb Area Conference All-Academic Team.

Pertler is the son of Marge and Jeffrey Pertler. He graduated from Chippewa Valley High School with a 3.509 GPA and will attend Michigan State University in the fall.

His academic achievements have earned him academic all-state honors and admission to the Broad College of Business at MSU. A swimmer, Pertler was a two-time state qualifier, four-time county swimmer and three-time MISCA qualifier.

Scruggs is the daughter of Greg and Kathy Scruggs. She graduated from Dakota High School with a 4.0 GPA and will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall.

A two-sport athlete, she participated in track and field and swimming, where she was a state qualifier and academic All-MAC for both.

She gradauted summa cum laude and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Venditti is the son of Domenic and Maggie Venditti. He was Eisenhower's salutatorian and gradauted with a 3.99 GPA. He will attend Michigan State in the fall.

A recipient of the Principal's Award and member of the National Honor Society, he earned all-district academic honors for baseball and academic All-MAC honors for football and baseball.

On the football field, he was team captain and recognized as the team's most valuable player. He was also named all-county, second team All-East.
