Community Foundation Offers $5,000 in Scholarships to Township Students

The Macomb Township Community Foundation will award 10 $500 scholarships to area students this winter to fund higher education during the 2012-13 academic year.

This winter, 10 Macomb Township students will have the chance at $5,000 worth of scholarships through the .

The foundation will award 10 $500 scholarships to area students to be used toward higher education during the 2012-13 academic year.

"We are very excited about offering some of our finest Macomb Township students the opportunity to help further their education," said Mark Hurst, MTCF president, in a prepared statement. "Along with our recently announced creation of a Macomb Township Youth Ambassador program, we hope this scholarship effort will be a successful MTCF event once again to help us meet our mission of enhancing the educational, recreational, and cultural activities in Macomb Township."

MTCF Scholarship Committee Chair Gary E. Cynowa said nine scholarships will
be awarded to students attending a community college or a four-year college or university, and at least one other scholarship will be given to a student attending a post-high school vocational, technical, or creative arts institution.

Students may apply for the scholarships from Jan. 10-Feb. 23. Applications are available at local high schools, or by contacting Cynowa by mail at 45451 Fielding St., Macomb Twp., MI 48042, phone at (586) 949-3969, or e-mail at Gcynowa@comcast.net. Applications will soon be available on the MTCF website as well.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Macomb Township resident
  • Be a current current graduating senior in high school or already a student at an accredited post-high school institution
  • Have a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Return a completed application with two letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

A five-person evaluation committee will review each application and name the scholarship recipients in April. The recipients will be recognized at a reception May 17.

The MTCF is a non-profit charitable organization led by Macomb Township citizens and community civic and business leaders.
