County to Recognize 'Green' Chippewa Valley and L'Anse Creuse Schools

More than a dozen local schools have achieved Official Michigan Green School status during the 2010-11 school year.

Macomb County commissioners will recognize more than a dozen L’Anse Creuse and Chippewa Valley schools Monday for achieving Official Michigan Green School status during the 2010-11 school year.

The award ceremony, which will be held at the Macomb Intermediate School District, will recognize 101 Macomb County schools as Michigan green schools.

School representatives will receive a flag and certificate signed by Macomb County Board Chair Kathy D. Vosburg and Gov. Rick Snyder.

Last year, 71 Macomb County schools earned "Green" status. Schools can also achieve “Emerald” or “Evergreen” status based on their projects and level of enthusiasm for environmentally responsible projects and education at the K-12 level.

“Green” Chippewa Valley Schools include: Algonquin Middle, Cherokee Elementary, Chippewa Valley High School, Erie Elementary, Huron Elementary, , Miami Elementary, , , Ottawa Elementary, , , and Wyandot Middle.

L’Anse Creuse Schools that achieved “Green” status include: , Burdi Early Childhood Center, Carkenord Elementary, Chesterfield Elementary, Graham Elementary, Green Elementary, Higgins Elementary, L'Anse Creuse High School, , L'Anse Creuse Middle School Central, L'Anse Creuse Middle School East, , L'Anse Creuse Middle School South, Lobbestael Elementary, Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center, Pankow Vocational Center, South River Elementary, Tenniswood Elementary and Yacks Elementary School.

The Green Schools program is a joint venture between the Macomb County
Board of Commissioners and the MISD. It is funded through grants, and by donations from Waste Management and DTE Energy.

During Monday’s program, this year’s “Top School” awardee, as well as the three winners of AT&T’s Project ReDirectory Challenge in Sterling Heights will also be announced.
