Lorenzo Exhibit Focuses on Pop Culture Portrayals of Women in the 1950s

The Lorenzo Cultural Center's latest exhibit is The 1950s:  Affluence and Anxiety in the Atomic Age, which focuses on several cultural and political points of the decade, including the role of women.

On April 28 at 11 a.m., author Catherine Gourley showcases how 1950s media encouraged woman to practice felinity (and patriotism) by leaving the work force, getting married and having babies in Gidgets and Warrior Women: How Popular Culture Portrayed Women in the 1950s.  She also explores how many women rejected these stereotypes and why they did, as well as the consequences of their rebellion.

The lecture is free to attend, but requires advance registration. Please call 586-445-7348.
