Go Green Club Leads LCN's Environmental Efforts

L'Anse Creuse High School North's "green" efforts are led by its Go Green Club, which runs the school's recycling efforts and hosts numerous events throughout the year.

Having recently earned "Evergreen" status as a Michigan Green School, L'Anse Creuse High School North owes much of its "green" progress to its Go Green Club. Through yearly projects and events, the club works to educate the student and teacher population in being "green."

Name:

Green Dream: In each and every "green" effort at the school, the Go Green Club has been at the fore. Installing bins for plastic bottles and used paper in all classrooms, club members trek through the school each week to collect and recycle these items. The pop bottles collected are returned and the deposits used to fund green projects to benefit the school and surrounding community. Because the company used to pick up recyclables does not take aluminum cans, a club member recycles these items on his own time so they do not end up in the garbage. In the spring, the Go Green Club will begin planting perennials and herbs in a garden built on school property.

Why go green? “We only have one earth after all,” said Debbie Schultz, Go Green Club sponsor. “We do not have unlimited resources here, so it’s just so important today to understand that we have to protect our resources and protect what we have and to not continue destroying things. It’s so important to work with students on this because they are the future. If we can get a 14-, 15-, 16-year-old to reduce, reuse, recycle and come up with new innovative ideas, we’ll go a long way.”
