L'Anse Creuse Schools Exceed 2011 State Math, Reading MEAP Scores

With few exceptions, L'Anse Creuse Public Schools posted higher scores on the 2011 MEAP than those recorded in state averages.

Exceeding the majority of state averages and previous years' scores, L'Anse Creuse Public Schools found fared fairly well on the 2011 MEAPs when results were released earlier this week.

"Our district scores were high in comparison to both the state and county at elementary and middle school in all content areas," said Lisa McFee, L'Anse Creuse director for curriculum and instruction.

With the exception of fifth grade science and ninth grade social studies–in which the percentage of L'Anse Creuse students considered "proficient" (passing) was below the state average–L'Anse Creuse schools saw students excel in math, reading and writing across all grade levels.

“Due to changes in the cut scores implemented by the Department of Education, scores statewide appear to have dropped,” McFee said, in a prepared statement. "In comparison to state averages, L’Anse Creuse did well."

In September 2011, the State Board of Education changed MEAP cut scores in an effort to better measure “career-and college-ready achievement standards.” Cut scores refer to the measure used by schools to determine whether a student is advanced, proficient, partially proficient or not proficient in certain subjects.

Moving forward, McFee said the district will analyze its 2011 scores to identify and correct any curriculum and instructional gaps.

“Our staff has been trained in the utilization of Data Director to analyze scores and identify curriculum gaps,” McFee said, in a prepared statement. “Once gaps have been identified, the district school improvement team and individual teams at each building will research best practices and implement strategies most suited to meeting the identified needs.”
