L'Anse Creuse Increases Meal Prices 5-10 Cents

For the first time in five years, the district is increasing the cost of its breakfasts and lunches for all grade levels.

Students buying breakfast and lunch in L'Anse Creuse Public Schools this year will need a few extra nickels and dimes as the district is increasing its meal costs by 5 to 10 cents.

When section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Act of 2010 went into effect July 1, it was mandated that all school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program were required to provide the same level of support for lunches served to students who are not eligible for free or reduced price lunches as they are for lunches served to students eligible for free lunches.

In an effort to comply with this new requirement, the district raised its meal prices.

“L’Anse Creuse has not increased food costs for students in over five years,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. DiAnne M. Pellerin, in a release. “We understand the financial hardships taking place in our community and only implemented the minimum, mandated increase.”

L’Anse Creuse will also introduce specialty menus at the high school level with a cost of $3 per lunch.

“The new specialty menu will provide greater selections for students,” said Tanya Nofs, assistant supervisor for Food & Nutrition Services, in a release. “We constantly review meal plans and input from students and believe that our range of healthy lunches continues to be a great value in Macomb County."
