Letter from L'Anse Creuse Public Schools: What Went Right on First Day

As we begin the 2012-2013 school year in L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, we wanted to report “what went right” for our 12,000 students on the first few days of school:

• Our 630 teachers, 24 principals and associate principals and 946 support staff welcomed students, helped them find their classes, began the teaching process and, in general, created an exceptional learning environment.
• 6,700 students were safely transported to school by 69 bus drivers on 69 routes traveling 5,800 miles each day.
• Our custodial staff cleaned classrooms and repaired furniture, polished gymnasium and hallway floors, and provided a clean, friendly and safe environment for each student.
• Our grounds and maintenance staff inspected and repaired parking lots, driveways, bus loops, playground equipment, and sidewalks all before the first day of school. Roofs were inspected and repaired as necessary. Trees and shrubs were pruned, fertilized or replaced and grass was trimmed all summer.
• The front office staff greeted students and handled multiple tasks simultaneously, as they do all year.
• Our 80 food service personnel served and 333 breakfasts.
• District administrators, principals and board members spent much of their summer making sure the district is focused on doing what is right for students. The coordination of 12,000 students, 1,600 staff members, and 18 school buildings does not happen by accident, but with diligent planning.
• Thanks to great L’Anse Creuse families, 12,000 students arrived at school safely and prepared to learn.
